Huntsville Havoc head to game 3

The Huntsville Havoc scored in overtime tonight beating the Mississippi RiverKings 4-3.

In a spectacular come-from-behind victory the sixth ranked Havoc (1-1-0) secured a final game in the challenge round of the Southern Professional Hockey League fight for the cup.

Huntsville right-wing Stephen Hrehoriak matched the third ranked RiverKings (1-0-1) first period goal at 17:09. Mississippi answered with a pair of goals in the second.

For over a period 4,046 fans watched the Havoc skate sloppily, make weak passes and provide poor defense for goalie Mike DeLaVergne. The arena erupted into boos as officials missed hooking and tripping penalties by the RiverKings.

After failing to capitalize on a 5-3 power play Huntsville started to look alive. For the much of final ten minutes a completely different team took to the ice with crisp checks and clean passes.

Left-wing Kyle Sharkey scored at 11:23 in the third period; he was assisted by defensemen Anthony Calabrese and Nolan Kaiser. Just thirty seconds later left-wing Justin Fox pushed one past the RiverKings. Hrehoriak and center Shawn Bates were there for the assist.

DeLaVergne went on to make 28 saves ending the 60-minute regulation play at 3-3. An eighth penalty for Mississippi forced the RiverKings to begin overtime 5-4.

Center Christian Powers sunk his shot in goal at 1:46 clinching the Havoc’s second chance at moving on in the playoffs. He was assisted by Calabrese and defenseman Stuart Stefan for a total of 44 shots on goal.

Huntsville’s three stars of the game were, in order, Powers, Fox and Sharkey.

Tonight’s game isn’t the first time Huntsville has fought severe weather conditions during playoffs. Their 1998-1999 season concluded with a delayed win while seven tornadoes swept by the arena forcing an evacuation.

The Havoc will be playing tomorrow at 5pm in the Von Braun Center Propst Arena.
